Tasmanian winemakers have been highly successful at the 2008 Hobart
International Wine Show.
Moores Hill Estate Riesling 2008 won three
trophies:
The Tasmanian Wine Centre Trophy for Best
Riesling,
Abel Labels Trophy for
Best Tasmanian White Wine, and
Morilla Claudio Alcorso Trophy for Best Tasmanian Wine
Bream Creek Vineyard won two trophies:
Blundstone Australia Trophy for Best
Sauvignon Blanc, for their 2008 vintage,
and
Bartercard Trophy for Most Successful
Tasmanian Exhibitor.
Kelvedon Estate won the Wine Industry Tasmania Trophy
for Best Tasmanian Red Wine, for their 2006 Pinot Noir.
The performance of Tasmanian winemakers in Pinot Noir Class 52
(2006 vintage and older) and Class 67 (any vintage) was
outstanding.
Of the 23 medals awarded in Class 52, 20 went to Tasmanian wines.
As well as Kelvedon's trophy winning wine, gold
medals in this class were awarded to:

Josef Chromy 2006 Pinot

Pembroke 2006 Pinot Noir
Tasmanian-grown Pinot Noir won all 20 medals awarded in Class 67,
including a gold medal to Stefano Lubiana
Estate 2006 Pinot Noir.
Bass Fine Wines won a gold medal for
its 2007 Strait Pinot Noir.
Pressing Matters won gold medals for both
their 2007 and 2008 Riesling.

Tasmanian winemaker Greer Carland was one of
ten finalists in The Wine Society's Young Winemaker of the Year
competition. This year’s award attracted entries from over 50 winemakers
in Australia and New Zealand who submitted a total of 159 wines.
Greer graduated as an oenologist from the University of Adelaide in
December 2000. Greer has been a member of the Winemaking
Tasmanian winemaking team since July 2004. Greer was an Associate
Judge at the 2007 Tasmanian Wine Show.
Greer presented the 2005 Bream Creek Reserve Pinot Noir for judging in the
recent competition. This wine received the Trophy for Best 3-Year-Old Pinot Noir
at the 2008 Tasmanian Wine Show.
At a dinner in Sydney on 1 November, Ben Haines from Mitchelton Wines in
Nagambie, Victoria was named The Wine Society Young Winemaker of the Year 2008.
Ron Corby, Acting CEO of The Wine Society, said: “In the eight years of The
Wine Society Young Winemaker of the Year Awards, this was the closest contested
finals ever."
The judging panel included John Belsham of Foxes Island, NZ. John was the International
Judge at the 2007 Tasmanian Wine Show.
