Judging Panel

The Tasmanian Wines Show uses just a single panel, of three judges plus associate judge(s). James Halliday, as the 'working' panel chairman, tastes every wine each year - along with Huon Hooke, and the third and associate judges. This has allowed both James and Huon to build up an awesome knowledge and understanding of Tasmanian wines, as well as convey it to the world through their writings.

By contrast the capital city wine shows have three or four panels, each with a panel chairman, and the overall chairman doesn't judge any classes; also, no one judge tastes more than a fraction of the wines.

James Halliday

James has been Chairman of Judges since the Tasmanian Wines Show's inception in 1991. He is a keen fly fisherman who chefs a wicked trout risotto. When in Tasmania James likes to divide his time equally between fishing and judging, and enjoys a Hazards Ale after both.

James has authored a whole shelf of books.  His Australia Wine Companion contains detailed information on a plethora of Tasmanian producers.

He can also be read on the net at www.winepros.com.au
