The
Tasmanian Wine Show
Society was formed late in 1990 and the first Tasmanian Wine Show was
held, in Hobart, in February 1991. It attracted 43 entries from 16
exhibitors and Delamere Winery won the 'Best Wine of Show' trophy with
their 1990 Chardonnay.
Current
president Phil Laing
was a cofounder of the society, together with the Meadowbank winemaker
of
the day, and recalls the committee of two meeting over a beer in a
small country hotel in the Derwent Valley.
James
Halliday, known to Phil
from competing in rival teams at national and interstate wine
competitions, was invited to be chairman of judges at the inaugural
show. Huon Hooke was invited to judge at the second show of
1992.
The
continued participation of both James and Huon has been a key element
in the ongoing success of the Tasmanian Wines Show.
The
name of the show has been
tweaked a little. The
term 'Regional', utilised from 1992 to 1996, was used to denote that it
was for Tasmanian wines only, as distinct from the Royal Hobart Wines
Show - a capital city show that attracts thousands of entries from
across Australia and New Zealand.
The Drysdale
Institute of TAFE
became the venue for the 1998 show and is an excellent facility. All
our sponsors, many of whom are long term ones, have also provided
valuable support.
